Napapijra was founded in 1987, originally manufacturing a travel bag called the Bering bag. It was a waxed canvas duffel bag marketed to travellers.
In 1990 the company began designing and producing clothing and accessories, introducing the signature Skidoo Jacket.
Its first store opened in Chamonix, France in 1997. Since then the company has consistently added stores, with the current number being 175 around the world.
The name Napapijra is a variation of the Finnish word for the Arctic Circle. Its logo, with the top half positive and the bottom half negative writing, symbolises the North and South Pole. The Norwegian Flag is also incorporated to evoke that countries extreme conditions.
