In 1830 John Rich II, the son of an English wool carder, set off from Liverpool sets off for a new life and heads for America. Along with Daniel McCormick where they founded the Woolrich Woolen Mills in Pennsylvania. It is the oldest manufacturer of outdoor wear in America.
The company makes clothing for the new pioneers of the USA, lumberjacks and farmers, making hard wearing clothes for the varying climates of the country. The first wool products were sold direct by Rich himself who travelled the country his fabrics and socks.
In 1972 Woolrich introduced the original Arctic Parka, designed for use by the construction workers on the Alaskan pipeline.
In the 1980’s the company struggled to compete with the new competition on the market, and staffing has dwindled from a high of 2600 employees in 1980 to only 200 in 2013.
