Carhartt is a family owned label started in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt in Detroit Michigan. It was created originally to manufacture workwear for railroad workers, and has the company logo ‘From the Mill to Millions’.
It survived as workwear until the 70’s and 80’s when it became an anti-fashion icon of the punk and then the grunge scene. Hip Hop of the 1980’s also adopted the label.
In the 1990’s Carhartt became popular with drug dealers, who needed strong warm clothing to wear while they spent their days on the streets. Kids seen this and adopted the label.
Due to its rising popularity with the fashion conscious, Carhartt WIP (Work In Progress) was born in 1994. The label opened a distribution network across Europe and in 1997 the first exclusive Carhartt WIP range was released.
